Offering shelter to victims of domestic violence and abuse
Domestic Violence Awareness Events
On October 1st we co-sponsored the launch of Domestic Violence Awareness Month with our sister agencies, the Board of Legislators and the Westchester County Executive.
We challenged participants to pledge to walk 20 miles throughout the month of October. The distance symbolized the pervasive nature of domestic abuse and honored victims everywhere. It highlighted the alarming statistic that nearly 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner each minute in the United States, according to the National Center for Injury and Prevention Control. We are so thankful to all our participants!
On October 9th the Bedford Playhouse held a conversation with Michelle Horton, author of an acclaimed book that explores the vast impact domestic violence and criminalized survival has on a family and community. Moderated by Susan Williamson, owner of Booksy Galore.
Dear Sister is a breathtaking memoir about two sisters and a high-profile case: the author’s sister, Nikki Addimando, spent 7 years incarcerated for killing her longtime abuser, and was released from Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in January of 2024. Dear Sister is a profound, intimate story about not just surviving trauma, but turning it into hard-won wisdom. It is a story of resilience and the unbreakable bond of family.
On October 16 the Hope’s Door Advisory Council hosted an unforgettable evening at Kanopi, in White Plains, featuring cocktails, breathtaking skyline views, and a culinary experience from Chef Anthony Gonçalves and more.
Attendees heard an inspiring story of a former client who successfully rebuilt their life, culminating in an uplifting candlelight concert. Together, we will plant the seeds of hope within our community for a future without domestic violence.
