Hope’s Door Survivor Stories

Arthur’s Story
After years of physical, financial, and emotional abuse, Arthur decided to leave his boyfriend and move back home.  Unfortunately, as in many domestic violence situations, Arthur found himself contemplating returning to the relationship out of the “love” he had for his boyfriend.

Seeing his distress and sensing his ambivalence about his former partner, his parents researched our services for victims of domestic violence, and were able to convince Arthur to call the Hope’s Door hotline.  The hotline immediately connected him with a counselor who worked sensitively with Arthur to identify the danger he was in and to develop a safety plan for himself and his family.  Thereafter, Arthur worked with Hope’s Door Legal Center and obtained two orders of protection against his former partner.  His counselor encouraged Arthur to see an outside therapist and also to join the male support group at Hope’s Door.  Years later, Arthur continues to heal emotionally from the abuse, continues to take an active role in his male support group, and is building a new and fulfilling life with a different and caring partner.
